What etiquette rules should stay forever?

Here is my list of basic rules of etiquette:

  • Speak politely to people, especially if you’re asking for help.
  • Make a conscious effort not to interrupt people when they are speaking.
  • Remember to say thank you if somebody has been of help to you.
  • If you need to get by, say excuse me – don’t just barrel through a narrow space!
  • Chew food with your mouth closed.
  • Don’t talk with a mouthful of food.
  • Hold the door open for the next person.
  • Don’t lick the plate!
  • Throw your garbage out.
  • Clean up after yourself.
  • If you are a dinner guest in someone’s home, offer to help clean up - and mean it!
  • If you are invited to someone’s home for dinner, bring a small gift to show your appreciation.
  • If you receive a gift, be sure to thank the person who gave it to you.
  • Don’t floss your teeth in public.
  • Don’t pick your nose in public!
  • Wash your hands with soap after you go to the bathroom - always!
  • Offer your seat on a bus or a train to a senior or a pregnant woman. This is still a courteous and respectful thing to do.
  • Speak respectfully when talking to your parents.
  • Don’t overstay your welcome if you are an invited guest in someone’s home.
  • If you are on an airplane, never put your feet on the armrest between the seats in front of you!
  • If you are on an airplane, never put disgusting things inside the pocket in front of your seat. Some examples are dirty diapers or half eaten food. Someone has to clean up your garbage so be considerate.
